Grill Bratwursts without Charring the Skin

  • Step 1

Prepare and preheat the grill. Start with a sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil large enough to wrap 3-4 bratwursts. Approximately 1 foot by 1 1/2 feet in size.

  • Step 2

Place 3-4 brats on the aluminum foil. Slightly fold the edges of the foil up to create a barrier for the water. Add a 1/2 cup of water to the brats. Pull the longer sides of the foil together and fold down toward the bratwursts to seal the package. Fold each of the two remaining sides over several times to seal the edge of the package. You should now have a foil package of brats and water. The package does not have to be tight, there should be about 1/2 inch pocket of air around the bratwursts to help with the steaming.

  • Step 3

Place the foil packet on a hot grill. The heat should be about medium high. Steam the brats for 10-15 minutes. Remove the bratwursts from the foil and place directly on the grill. Grill the bratwursts for an additional 10 minutes. For even browning, rotate the brats every 3-4 minutes.

  • Step 4

Place the cooked bratwursts on hot dog/sausage buns. They can be topped with peppers, onions and/or mustard. This same method can be used for sausages and ribs. Adjust the times for the size of the meat.
