Step 1
Select your tri-tip: Go to the grocery store and select a tri-tip that has already been seasoned. Select a tri-tip that is around 2 1/2 lbs. Take the tri-tip out of the refrigerator about 45 minutes before cooking.
Step 2

Prep the grill: Turn on gas grill 10 minutes before cooking. Turn burners on high.
Step 3
Start cooking: Place tri-tip on top rack of gas grill. Place a pan directly underneath it to catch the juices and keep the tri-tip from receiving direct flames. Close the lid and let cook for 5 minutes on high. Rotate the tri-tip and let it cook for another 5 minutes on high.
Step 4
Next 20-40 minutes: Turn burners down to Medium. Rotate the tri-tip every 10 minutes.
Step 5
At 40 minutes of cooking turn the burners down just a little more. Just turn the knob(s) so it is slightly under Medium. Rotate the tri-tip every 5 minutes until done.
Step 6

Additionally, at 40 minutes make a slice in the middle of the tri-tip to check if it is done. If you want to have some of the middle pink, then the tri-tip will probably be ready to take off the grill around 45-48 minutes. If you want it Medium, then probably take it off around 49-52 minutes. If you want it well done, probably take it off around 52-55 minutes.
Step 7
Take tri-tip off the grill when done and wrap in tin foil. Let tri-tip sit in tin foil for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes you are ready to eat.
